Chapter 15

Night falls early, and with it the temperature. With my win, I’ve also earned the right to use the hot tub, but before I can even consider taking a dip, Liv arrives with news that has every right to be bad.

“The tractor is broken down.”

“We have a tractor?” Trey asks from the sofa. There’s no television to watch here, but he’s been staring into the wood paneling for the last half hour as though it were a sitcom he’d been waiting all week to watch. Now he’s peering back at Liv’s surprise appearance.

“Yes, we have a tractor, but the fuel lines froze last night and it’s not starting up.”

“Fuel can freeze?” This is from Reese, who’s found a battered chess set in a closet and has been playing a game with Kelly. I didn’t think a guy like Reese would know the rules of such a sophisticated game, but his transformation continues to amaze.

“Yes,” Liv says, not even trying to hide her exasperation. “We have a tractor. And it gets cold enough here for fuel to freeze. Is there anything else I can answer for you? I seem to have become a walking encyclopedia since I last checked myself in a mirror.” She looks at her dark reflection in the window. “Which has been longer than I would like. God, I hate it here.”

“So, you were saying we have a tractor,” I say to get her back on track.

“Yes, and it’s broken. We were going to use it to move the hot tub over to your cabin, but that’s not happening, so if you want to use it, you’re going to have to make the trek across to Lucy’s cabin. I’ll be notifying her next. I’ll make sure she knows not to interfere, so I expect you to do the same while you’re over there.”
