Chapter 21

Like most males, Joe wishes women were as logical as men, but with four sisters, he knows they’re not.

So why is he surprised to discover that Claudia is no different?

“Nope,” Joe said when Claudia reached for the finger paddles. He held out his hand. “The jacket too.”

She gave him a pouty look, but when he didn’t relent, she unzipped and shrugged the jacket off.

He took the gear, carefully not watching her bare skin reappear—especially that pale strip between her breasts that her bikini covered but this suit didn’t. Looking at that was just asking for a hard-on.

After he stowed the paddles and jacket beside his gear bag, he said, “We’re going to review basics.”

“Don’t I have to learn them before I can review them?”

“Well, you know how to float, so we’re going to review that.”

Her eyebrows twitched up, but then she shrugged. “You’re the boss.” She took a step toward the pool.

“Where you going?”

She stopped. Turned. Looked at him with suspicion. “Into the pool.” Like she was waiting for him to spring a trap.

“Let’s review the salient points first. Floating happens on the surface of the water, right?”

“Riiight.” She drew the word out like she was poking the suspected trap with a stick.

“And it doesn’t matter how much water is below you, right?”

She cocked her head, her eyes narrowed. “Uh-huh.”

“Then there’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to float in the deep end.”

“No.”

“Good.” He turned to walk that way. “Then let’s—”

“I mean no, I’m not doing that.”

He stopped and turned back. “I thought I was the boss.”

“You’ve just been demoted.”

“Then I guess we do this the hard way.”

She took a step back as though she expected him to scoop her up, carry her to the deep end, and throw her in.

He suppressed a smile. He’d known she was going to balk. “I mean that I’ll have to talk you into it.”

“Can’t be done.”

“Claudia, isn’t this the point of the lessons? To get you to where you’re”—he bit back not afraid—“comfortable in water over your head?”

She hesitated and he wondered if this was going to be easier than he’d thought.

“I’m not ready.” She looked calm. Reasonable even. But she also took half a step back.

“I’m not asking you to swim laps. I’m only asking you to float. If you can do it here”—he gestured toward the shallow end—“you can do it there”—and toward the deep end.

“I don’t want to.”

The words came out as a whine. Not an honest whine, but the high-pitched kind. The kind dive chicks used when their boyfriends finally nutted up and left them to carry their own tanks. The kind of whining his last girlfriend had done when he hadn’t even noticed she was waiting for him to carry her tank.

He hadn’t expected that from Claudia. Yes, she bitched and moaned and, when he was looking—when she was sure he’d notice—she tried to take shortcuts, but it was an act. Something to get a reaction from him. Once he got her to settle down and apply herself, she didn’t cut herself any slack.
