Chapter
Fifteen
Diana, attempting to ignore the water that was hammering down on her, slid into the driver side of the car and shouted, âJackie, Iâm a police officer. I have help coming. Can you move at all?â The other car had slammed into the side Saul had been in. Had he not gotten out in time, the chase for him would have been over.
Jackieâs screams stopped, and he looked with glazed eyes at Diana. âHelp me,â he moaned.
She reached for his hand and tried to pull. But Tiny had him lodged tightly between his huge bleeding stomach and the crumpled dashboard. âIâll be right back,â she told Jackie. âIâm not leaving you. I will get you out of here.â
With the help of a couple of strong patrol officers, they managed to get the passenger door open. Diana was glad it was an older car, for it did not have automatic seats and they were able to slide the seat back. She was then able to gently lift Jackie away from the body of Tiny, who was clearly deceased, and get the boy into an ambulance.
She was surprised as she was helping with the driver of the rubbernecking vehicle to hear a familiar voice say, âDetective Franklin, is there anything I can do to help?â
She looked up into the tearstained face of Sydney Greenbaum. âNo, weâve got it, Sydney, but thanks for saving my life.â
âI knew Dad was a monster,â Sydney said, âbut a killer?â
âIâm sorry,â Diana said.
âIs that giant guy dead? I see that no one is bothering with him,â she said, her voice shaky.
âHe is.â
âI killed him,â Sydney said, and fresh tears descended in torrents down her pretty face.
âNo, your father is responsible for his death. You had no choice, and anyway, for all we know, it was the crash that killed him,â Diana said. âYou are a hero today, and donât you ever forget it.â
âI bet you thought Iâd caved in to Dad when I went in the house,â Sydney said between sobs.
âI wasnât thinking a lot about anything other than how I was going to get out of that situation with my life. You solved that for me. Thank you.â
âYou are soaked, and so are those other officers,â Sydney observed as she slowly regained control of her emotions. âWas Jackie okay? I saw him being loaded in an ambulance.â
âIâm sure heâs hurt bad, but heâll live,â Diana said. âMy question is, are you okay?â
âI will be,â she said. âI guess Dad got away.â
âFor now,â Diana told her. âI think these other officers have things under control here now. I need to go change into some dry clothes and get back to my office. Thank you again, Sydney. I owe my life to you.â
Diana finally arrived back at her desk, dry but emotionally torn. Sergeant Snow joined her there. âAre you all right, Detective?â he asked.
She nodded. âIâm fine. Iâm just sorry I messed up so badly.â
âIâll need a full report from you, but I already know that you acted with heroism, and I want to thank you for that.
