Someone nudged Jackson awake. “Wake up! You wake up!”

“Huh?” Jackson tried to sit up, but the person pushed him down. “What’s going on?”

“You wake up. Time to get up.”

Jackson blinked at the wrinkled face staring down at him with large, shiny eyes. He rummaged through his memories of the last few days before he placed her. “Fulia.”

“Fulia,” the little creature confirmed.

“Is…is something wrong? Why are you waking me up?”

“She probably wants to know if you can make her feet smaller,” Roy grumbled, and he turned onto his side to face the wall.

“Keterans in the female section,” Fulia whispered to Jackson. “Female Keterans.”

Jackson shot upright. “The twins—they’re in the female section? You saw them?”

“In danger. Urval hate Keterans.”

Jackson pursed his lips. “There’s no way to bring them over here, is there?”

“In danger here,” Fulia pointed out.

Jackson looked out of the cubicle. The prison hold looked as daunting as ever. “There has to be a way. How bad is it? How much danger are they in?”

She shrugged. “Maybe dead by now.”

“Then why are you waking us up?” Roy snapped. “There’s nothing we can do and they might be dead by now, so go away and leave us alone.”

Jackson measured his next question for maximum effect. “How exactly do you pass back and forth between the male section and the female section, Fulia?”

“Through front door. Guard let Fulia through.”

“That’s strange. I didn’t see any guards when Burk put us in here.”

“Electronic. Field guard. Programmed for Vurlax. No other species.”

Jackson slumped. “I thought so.”

“Take message there?” Fulia asked. “What message?”

Jackson had to think about that. What message could he possibly send to the twins? He didn’t want to tell them he was going to try to save them when that might not be possible. He had to save himself first, and then maybe Roy. He couldn’t be sure he’d be able to do anything beyond that.

He swung his legs out of the alcove. Somehow their food had been replaced during the night, but he wasn’t hungry. He stood up outside the compartment and gauged the distance to the entrance where he’d first entered this place.

“Captain?” Roy asked from inside. “You going somewhere?”

“I’m going back over to the entrance to see if there’s any sign of a way out of here.”

“There won’t be,” Roy muttered.

“I know that, but I’m going anyway.” He waved to Fulia. “You should come with me. You can explain to me where this field guard is.”

“Hold up.” Roy hefted his tethered leg off the bed. He thumped his heavy foot to the ground. “I’ll come with you.”

“You stay put. You’ll only slow me down.”

“If we’re right about this thing, it’ll be like carrying a loaded weapon with us everywhere. It will be our best defense if anyone messes with us.”

“I won’t argue with you.” Jackson faced forward. Fulia hung close to his side. “Are you coming?”

“Fulia coming. Show you field guard.”

“Thank you.” The trio started forward. Roy hobbled, sliding his left foot across the floor, and muttered curses under his breath.

Jackson scanned the prison population on their way back to the entrance.
