Audio-animatronics can only go so far in creating the wonderful world of Disney. It’s the park’s cast members—those in the public eye as well as those working “backstage”—who really make Mickey’s magic work. There were 6,000 to 7,000 Disney World employees when the park opened in 1971. Some were drawn to Central Florida with dreams of working at the theme park, and many were rewarded with wages of about $2 an hour—and they were happy to earn that amount. Jobs ranged from sweeping cigarette butts off streets to performing as Disney characters to shepherding visitors as Hostesses. Getting all employees in the right costumes and at the right places for their jobs was no easy task.
