Notes

There is no available sampling frame for the population of WhatsApp users; hence probability-based sampling is not possible.

Participants were first asked a screening question about exposure to information on WhatsApp within their messaging group. Specifically, they reported the frequency of sharing/forwarding of news and information by others in their groups in the same five categories mentioned. Response options were: Once a month or less, 2 to 3 times a month, Once a week, Once every day, 2 to 5 times a day, 6 to 10 times a day, 11 to 20 times a day, and More than 20 times a day. The aim of this was to limit inflated responses; participants who responded “once a month or less” were not asked the exposure outcome variable; hence the lower N for the models of these outcome variables as seen in Tables 7.1 and 7.2.

The reliability (Cronbach’s alpha) was high, with 0.91, 0.92, and 0.92 in Singapore, Turkey, and the US respectively.

The reliability (Cronbach’s alpha) was high, with 0.91, 0.88, and 0.89 in Singapore, Turkey, and the US respectively.

The broader survey included measures about privacy, media habits, messaging group characteristic, and digital literacy, which are beyond the scope of this chapter.
