It’s nightfall by the time I drag myself out of Elle’s house and head back over to the hospital. I went back and watched the CCTV too many times to count after Elle said I could use her office alone, and after watching Ezra fall over and over again, I need to set eyes on him. I am taking the same route as last time after Lincoln drops me at the service entrance with the promise to wait for my return. He didn’t say much on the drive over, something I have come to like about him, and I trust that he will wait for me.

The hospital is quiet, the late hour meaning not many visitors are left now, but I just need to get in and see Ezra, even if it’s only for a couple of minutes. I just need to know he is safe and alive. I skirt down the hallway towards his room, keeping my head down out of habit more than anything else, and when I reach his room I feel a sense of relief before I even step inside.

It’s quiet on his floor, not many nurses or doctors around at all, making it easy for me to slip into his room without anyone noticing. I want some time to myself with him, but when I close the door behind me I notice I’m not alone. A tall frame is standing over his bed wearing a white coat, he startles when the door clicks and when he turns around I notice a large familiar scar down the side of his left cheek. Stevens.

One of Carter’s other trusted guards besides Jeffrey is hoarding over Ezra with a large needle in his hand. I don’t know what is in it, but I know it’s not good. He forgoes whatever he was about to do and is on me before I can even take my next breath, grabbing me and pulling me towards him. The little bit of time spent with Elle down in the gym means my body subconsciously now knows to duck down, tucking my body into itself and knocking into him with as much force as I can muster.

We topple to the floor and the needle is his hand is lost under Ezra’s bed. I reach for the knife that I stole from Killian, the one that is now strapped to my thigh courtesy of Elle, and try my luck at using it on Stevens. He’s faster than Killian was, not distracted by us fucking, and he manages to easily disarm me, the knife being thrown towards the wall away from us. I still have the gun that Elle gave me tucked into the back of my jeans, but he climbs on top of me and traps my body between his and the floor. I throw my head back so it connects with his face and when he grunts in pain I scramble away from him, but again he is quick.
