We stepped out of the other side of the cave to an entirely different type of forest. This one wasn’t tropical; it was chilly and foggy. The tall black trees twisted and towered menacingly over us, blocking out the color of the sky. I stared past the men, silently watching as hues of pink and purple leaves floated down from the treetops, littering the ground all around us.

“This way then. Be on the lookout for anything unusual.” Demetri’s warning rang low.

“This is the trail I saw the witch on,” Jonah whispered, and the hair on my arms stood in response.

“I think I prefer the jungle,” I muttered.

We trudged underneath the swaying trees in silence for a while, stopping every now and then when the force of the wind would crack the tree limbs overhead. It was hard to tell how late it was getting, but the sporadic light that bounced through the cracks of the canopy leaves was noticeably dimmer than before.

I walked beside Demetri now, who’d had his sword drawn and ready to strike from the first moment we’d crossed through the portal barrier.

“What if we don’t find her?” I dared to ask, afraid to extensively dwell on the outcome of that question myself.

“Then we’ll expand the search.”

“Jonah said that when he found her before, it seemed like she knew he was looking for her. Like she wanted to be found.”

Demetri smirked, briefly allowing his gaze to settle on me. “Jonah is a bit of an embellisher when it comes to the details, love.”

“You think he’d lie about something like that?”

“I don’t know, I just know I wouldn’t put much faith into his stories.”

“The way you did when you agreed to let him join us on the trip to look for her?” I jeered.

“I do not doubt that he’s seen the witch before. He’s not foolish enough to lie to my face about that.”

“We’ll need to set up camp soon, Captain.” Alistair appeared beside us, keeping his voice at a volume lower than what I was accustomed to. “Night falls faster here in the forest.”

“Right,” Demetri agreed. “Let’s be on the lookout for a spot to set up.”

“There should be a place up just ahead,” Dalton chimed in from behind us. “The locals call it Cavern’s Creek. It’s the midway point between the shore and Mystic Village. We can probably make it there before night sets in. It’d be one of the safer places to set up camp.”

“Very well.” Demetri nodded. “We’ll rest tonight and get an early start in the morning. If we haven’t found the witch by tomorrow night, we’ll head north to the village and start asking around. We’re bound to find something sooner or later.”
