Chapter 15

Thadeus had found the right key. The lock now dangled in his hand. He swung the door open, and my body flooded with relief. Kassius emerged, looking more dishevelled than usual, but I flew into his arms and reveled in the warmth of his body as he put his arm around me.

“There’s no time for that.” Thadeus glanced over with a glimmer in his eyes that could have been mistaken for amusement if it were anyone else. “This way.”

I scanned the dim prison. “Where’s Zarian?”

“That’s a great question. Maybe he crawled back into the sewers.” Thadeus scoffed.

“Should we look for him?” I asked.

“No, he can find his way out. Let’s go.” Thadeus led us through the prison to the smaller cell block.

Kassius clutched my hand as we ran. Before we made it to the final cluster of cells, we heard footsteps fast approaching. Thadeus gripped his dagger.

“There you guys are,” Zarian said as he came into view. He was out of breath.

“Where have you been?” I nodded in his direction.

“We had company. I had to take care of it.”

As we approached the next cell block, a loud siren started to ring. I froze. “What is that?”

“That’s the palace alarm,” Thadeus shouted over the loud dinging.

“What did you do, Zarian?” I pushed past him.

“Nothing, I swear.”

No longer worried about being quiet or inconspicuous, we wove our way back through the maze of tunnels. There were so many twists and turns, I had no idea where we were anymore. And we didn’t exactly have time to stop and read the map; we just continued in the darkness, navigating our way through the underground tunnels by memory alone.

“Are we lost?” I shouted to Thadeus. “This doesn’t seem right.”

“Not exactly,” he mumbled. “With the alarm sounding, we can’t go back the way we came. I’m trying to find a tunnel that will take us away from the palace.”

The longer we were in the tunnels, the more trapped I began to feel. The passageway seemed to grow darker and colder the further we ran. I inched closer to Kassius, trying to suppress that feeling of panic that began to surface. Just breathe, I reminded my self, and I began to count each breath I took in my head. By the time I got to fifty, we had passed an iron ladder that extended upwards into the passageway, and when I got to one hundred and ninety-eight, we passed another.

This time, Thadeus stopped. “I’m going to check this out,” he said, placing his hand on the metal rung. We waited as he climbed to the top. Kassius put his arms around me, rubbing his hands up and down mine to keep me warm as I shivered in the darkness.

The sound of the siren had long faded, and as we waited, I silently prayed that this exit was far enough away from the palace that we could use it. Minutes passed before we heard Thadeus. “We’re in the clear,” he called out from the dark shadows.

Kassius helped me up the ladder first.
