Chapter 10

Cassie’s mom left to find her husband. They decided that she would bring him back to Chris’s pod to fill him in on their news so as not to draw too much attention amongst the other Compounders.

Cassie paced back and forth across the room while Chris sat with his head between his legs, trying not to throw up. He hadn’t minded telling her mom. He knew she would be okay. Maybe a little shocked but, in the end, okay. Her dad was another story. He wasn’t at all confident in explaining to him that he had slept with his precious baby girl, gotten her pregnant, and now intended to marry her without his expressed blessing.

“It’s going to be okay, Chris. He’s really just a big teddy bear. You’ll see.”

“Cassie, he’s going to turn bear alright, but it won’t be a teddy bear.”

“You just blurted it out to mom with no problems. Just do that again.”

“I don’t know if I can.” His stomach rolled over. “Oh God, I think I’m going to be sick.”

“Hey,” she said, laughing. “That’s my thing right now. You can’t use that excuse unless you want to carry this kid.”

She was only joking, and they both knew it but it did nothing to quell the nerves he felt.

“What have I done? He’s going to kill me!”

“This morning you were thrilled and on top of the world over being a father. Now you’re gonna turn chicken-shit?”

He took a deep breath. He knew she was right.

“We’re still in this together, right?” she asked.

That sobered him quickly.

“Baby, I’m not going anywhere. You hear me? I’m terrified of your father, and if he kills me tonight, please let our son or daughter, or sons and daughters, or one of each, even, know how much I loved them.”

He got down on his knees and kissed her belly.

She hugged him tightly to her and held him there. They were still in that position when the door swung open.

“Shit!” Chris said as he jumped up and pulled Cassie to his side.

Her father glared down at where they had been like the image was burned into his brain forever.

“What’s going on here?” he demanded.

“Nate, I need you to stay calm and hear them out,” his wife begged.

“Jeanette, let them speak for themselves.”

She shot an apologetic look their way before stepping aside and closing the door behind them.

“Now, someone better start talking. I said, what’s going on here?”

Cassie glared back at him and started, “Daddy, we…”

Chris cut her off and slightly stepped in front of her, shielding and protecting his fiancée and their unborn child.

“Mr. Worthington, I’ve asked Cassie to marry me, and she’s agreed.”

“We’ve talked about this, Chris,” he said, running his hands through his hair. “In the future, sure, but you’re both so young and you’ve only ever dated each other. Be patient. If it’s meant to be, it will be in time.”

“No, sir!” He stared the man down. “Cassie and I are getting married, and we’ll marry quickly.”

“Even without my permission?”

“Even without your permission.
