A RESTLESS NIGHT OF dark dreams haunted my waking hours. I’d nearly drowned. I’d been shot, chased, and almost crushed by a golem I’d later learned had been possessed by Razcolm. Worst of all, I was no nearer finding the rhet matrons. My last milk hadn’t been enough to fill my stomach.

I need to buy more bologna, but first I should probably deal with the rhet watching patiently from across the alley.

My dissatisfied stomach twisted. “All right. Tell Kenrith I’m ready.”

The rat scurried away, blurring as it exited the alley. A screech of brakes and crunching metal brought me to my feet. The rat sat upright atop a metal trash can on the opposite alley. It lifted a little paw in wave.

I cradled my head all the way back to the fence. I wasn’t sure where to go next in the search, so I set my mind to the only task readily apparent. I dug out the spell board and Glamour’s ritual instructions. I read them three times, set the board mid alley and measured out the components taken from Adam’s factory.

I sat in the board’s printed circle, weighing pros and cons in testing the spell on Kenrith or myself. The rhet knight wasn’t human, and the incantation had been designed for use on human beings. The origin spell had been tested successfully on animals. I’d always tested on animals first—especially spells I’d found through research.

God, that was a lifetime ago.

Even though it pained me to remember, it brought a smile to my face too. Jetting around the world, hacking my way through forests, delving into tombs like some action hero, it’d been a wondrous, surreal life. After our first few successes at Thoth, I’d explored the globe for old spells carved or painted in exotic hidey-holes. Lost and forgotten knowledge had sent me down lines of thought I might otherwise never have considered. The emergency room stasis spell had been one such success. It’d saved countless lives.

“And it would’ve saved more if Adam hadn’t jacked the price so high.”

Therein lay the crux that brought my disaster. We’d come to loggerheads time after time over Adam’s greed. I had no problem with a small profit to keep us afloat and fund further research, but gouging hospitals for the means to save people’s lives was unconscionable.

Adam had enough foresight early on to insist we include Thecia in our endeavors. Having the beautiful love of my life as part of our dreams, if only as a deciding vote, had seemed a fantastic idea.

What could ever have gone wrong? Oh, just about everything.

“Magus?”

I looked up at the small knight, hastily blanking the pain from my face. A group of variously sized rhet waited in a line against the far alley wall.

“Am I disturbing you?” Kenrith asked.

My head lied with a back and forth motion.

He straightened, holding his head high. “I stand prepared.”

“I’m concerned about using you in this test, Kenrith. That woman killed how many of your people without the weapons or skills
