“You have your fire lit, I see. That’s good.” Eduardo Cruz stepped into Don Forey’s front door as it was opened for him. “You didn’t get your car out last night. It would be a good idea to do that if the power comes back on for awhile.”

“Yeah, I forgot that.”

“How is your Annabelle doing with this? You keeping her warm?”

“Yeah, Mom’s doing okay. She’s in here asleep on the sofa where the fire’s going.”

“Okay. Good. We had an emergency over at Penny’s house this morning. Barnes found her almost dead from hypothermia.”

“My gosh! What happened?”

“She didn’t take this serious enough. Must have fallen asleep and almost didn’t ever wake up again. If Barnes hadn’t found her, she’d be dead right now.” He shook his head and took a deep breath, thinking of the irony of Barnes reason for visiting, and how that had saved Penny Tibbets’ life. “Don, just keep warm as much as you can. Keep your mom wrapped up. If you need anything, you know I’ve got things at my house. Be sure to ask, will you?”

Forey nodded and shook Cruz’s hand. He opened the door as Cruz moved back toward it and let him out.

Eduardo stepped into the clear sunlight and could see his warm breath clearly. It was twelve degrees. Colder than expected.

He walked directly to Nate Person’s house, between his own house and the Foreys’. Cruz knocked, waited, knocked again. He heard Person’s voice coming from inside.

“Hold on, I’m getting there!”

Cruz chuckled to himself. This old man would always be a survivor; he was too cantankerous to give in to problems. The door opened. “Morning Mr. Person. How are you today?”

“Cold! How is everybody else?”

“Ha, they’re all cold too. Just thought I’d stop and see if you’re okay.”

“Sure am. Fire’s burnin’. I cooked eggs over it today. You want some coffee?”

“No. No sir, but I would like to come in and talk with you for a minute if that’s possible.”

Person opened the door wider and motioned with his cane impatiently for Cruz to enter. They walked into the front room where the fire was beginning to light a new oak log. Person motioned to Cruz to sit. They both took places near the fire.

“Mr. Person, Penny Tibbets almost died today.”

“No!”

“Yeah. She had gone to sleep without taking any precautions and almost killed herself. Not on purpose. I just think she wasn’t thinking.”

“Lawdy! She gonna be all right now?”

“I think maybe she will. But, I want to ask something of you.”

“Go ahead and ask.”

“You live alone, and that’s not a good thing in this kind of situation. Penny Tibbets lives alone and she almost killed herself by mistake — at least, we think it was by mistake.”

“I think I hear what’s coming. Go on.”

“I’d like you to consider having her stay with you until we get past this. Will you think about that and let me know? It would just be safer for both of you.”

Person sat and looked into the fire for a few seconds.
