Tyler climbed off his bike and then pulled off his helmet, filling his lungs with some good ol’ ocean air. Seeing his boss pull into the parking lot of Neptune’s Net, he lifted his hand in greeting. He hadn’t been to the Malibu institution in ages and was glad that Anthony had suggested it.

Nothing better than fish and chips, a beer, and an unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean. He stored his helmet and took a moment to study the scrubby hills that backdropped the restaurant and was surprised how much they reminded him of the Stans.

The late afternoon sun painted the craggy mountains in pastels, and his mind instantly added the whine of a helicopter, making him remember all the times his unit had loaded up at the end of the mission.

Clearly able to recall the feeling of the bird lifting into the air and being overwhelmed and incredibly grateful that he and his brothers had survived another impossible mission, he sucked in a deep breath.

The contrast between the beautifully harsh landscape of the country and the evil warlords they’d hunted had never failed to hit him deep in the gut and was oddly still with him on this perfect day in Malibu. Hearing his name, he shook himself out his memories and waved to his boss. “Coming out here was a great idea.”

“Thanks,” Anthony replied as he slapped Tyler on the shoulder. “It’s good to get out of the Valley and appreciate the California Coast.”

“Roger that,” Tyler said as they both climbed the short staircase and walked into the restaurant. They took their place at the end of a long line, and he studied his boss’s face. The poor son of a bitch looked exhausted, and he wondered if it had more to do with working with his ex-wife than the ever-oppressive workload he’d always managed.

Not sure which stupid bureaucrat back in Washington thought putting the two together was a good idea. He crossed his arms and hoped his boss didn’t end up worse for wear.

Once they’d made it through the long line and had beers in hand, they settled themselves at a corner table on the patio. They had a bit of privacy, and he knew how rare that was at the beginning of a holiday weekend. “You staying in town through the weekend or heading back to Virginia?”

“I’ll be in town. Our kids are done with school for the semester, so we’re packing up their stuff and putting it into storage for the summer.”

“They’re at UCSB, right?”

“Yes. Don’t know how Isabel and I managed to make twins who are bleeding heart liberals, but we did.”

“It makes sense since kids always seem to want to be as different from their parents as they can.”

“I guess so. Having a spymaster and lifelong soldier as parents sure gave them an interesting perspective.”

“They got to see more of the world than most.”

“Ain’t that the damn truth. How many American kids spent their middle school years in the Khost region?”

“Maybe just your two.
