When I stop by my mama’s to finally tell her the good news about opening up my own hair salon, she thinks I’ve gone plum out of my mind. Not to mention the fact, she’s not too pleased that I’ve been holding out on her financially.

“You mean to tell me you have that kind of money saved? Why the hell didn’t you tell somebody? You know I be needing help with your brothers and sisters.”

I roll my eyes. I was already helping her out each month with the bills and keeping food on the table. What more did she want? “I know that and I do what I can for you Mama, but I have dreams of my own.”

“Dreams, that’s all they are. You don’t need to be wasting good money on some pipe dream.”

“I’m sorry you see it like that,” I respond. “But it is my money and I’ll spend it how I see fit.”

“Hmmpph,” was all she could say.

“You’ll see. Chanel’s is going to be a success because I have great friends like Layla, Reese and Skye helping me out.”

“Those siddity bitches?” Mama replies. “You could do better if you ask me.”

“Those siddity bitches are investing in my salon and giving me the capital I need to get Chanel’s going.”

“Guess they have money to waste.”

If it was possible to want to strangle your own mama, I definitely had the itch. The woman didn’t have one positive thing to say about her daughter with a high-school education starting up her own business. You’d think she’d be proud. But no, she was just as negative as ever. Just because she’d wasted her life didn’t mean I was going to follow in her footsteps. “I’m going to go now.”

I had enough self-doubt to begin with. I didn’t need her adding to my fears.

“Well if you ask me, I’d say keep your money.”

“I’m not asking you,” I reply. “I was merely letting you know my plans. Tell Shayla I will pick her up tomorrow and do her hair for the dance.”

“That girl is getting too fast,” Mama replies. “You better talk to her; otherwise she’ll end up with a couple of babies.”

“I will,” I say on my way out.

Once in my car, I let out a huge sigh of relief. I’d told the one person I’d been afraid to tell, and now the rest was all gravy.
