PLUMBING AND SHOWERS

The great thing about travel trailers is that they come with all the plumbing in place, including a freshwater holding tank and a 12-volt on-demand water pump. All that you need to do is make a few simple modifications to make it practical for full-time living and retreating.

Since my septic system backed up (more on that in a moment), I've used a simple gray-water recycling system. Gray water is the water that runs down the sinks and shower drain but not the toilet and can be safely used for flushing the portable toilet and watering trees, flowerbeds, or even vegetable plants if properly filtered or if you use only natural soap and no detergent.

I simply disconnected the sinks from the drain trap and placed a bucket underneath to catch the drain water from the sink. When the bucket is filled to within 3 inches of the top, I remove it from under the sink and filter by pouring through several layers of cloth.

As an extra precaution (and because it fits my personality), I use biodegradable soap for bathing, washing my hands, and cleaning dishes. You probably don't need to use this if you minimize the amount of soap used.
