DEVON SLEPT LIKE THE dead for the next two hours, then awoke with a start to seen the sun already sinking in the sky. He raced to the shower, intending to scald himself awake, then suddenly remembered he didnât have a place to be. He wandered back to the bedroom instead, changing into sweats and slippers, before padding sleepily downstairs to the kitchen.
James and Emma were sitting at the counter, sharing a bowl of ice cream.
âWe have multiple utensils,â Devon teased as he rounded the corner, flipping on the coffee-maker. âUnless you two like sharing a spoon.â
Emma blushed with a grin, while James rolled his eyes.
âNice hair,â he answered. âYou stick your finger into a socket?â
The fox pulled down a mug, unwilling to look at his reflection.
âCareful,â he warned, âthose things are genetic.â
âMaybe Aunt Molly touched your shoulder to wake you up?â
The children laughed to themselves as Devon cast a secret look over his shoulder.
He still remembered the day James had come home from Guilder and proudly announced heâd found himself a girlfriend. The most beautiful girl in the world, heâd called her, grinning ear to ear. His parents had smiled indulgently, nodding along. They hadnât expected it to last the year. They hadnât expected it to last the semester. But almost five years later, they were still going strong.
âSo what did you kids do today?â he asked, half to keep them from asking the same thing themselves. âDid you have a field rotation? Training?â
They froze in perfect unison before James offered a casual shrug.
âWe picked up Emmaâs mom from Kingâs Cross,â he answered lightly, âthought weâd get out of the house for a while and let her sleep.â
Devon turned around in surprise.
For years, the girl had been haunting his doorstep, but heâd never met the elusive Ms. Knight. He was beginning to wonder if the girl had made her up in an attempt to appear normal.
âOh, thatâs wonderful! Your momâs here for a visit?â
Cordelia Knight was an interpreter who worked with the foreign office. It was a thankless job with long hours and endless travel. She lived in hotels more than she did at home.
âWill she be in London for the holidays?â he prompted, when no one answered. âWe could have her for a dinner. We could even have her for Christmasâunless you already have plans.â
A layer of tension swept over the pair, almost too slight to notice. James dropped his eyes to the counter, fiddling with the ice cream, while Emma forced a quick smile.
âYeah, maybe.â
Or maybe not?
âActually, this is perfect timing.â James swooped in for the save, wiping chocolate from his lips, before turning seriously to his father. âIâd like you to formally approve Emma as my partner.â
Devon took a scalding sip of coffee, stalling for time. âI already did that.â
James blushed a little, but held his ground. âYou know what I mean. We want to work together for the agency.â Those enormous blue eyes grew impossibly larger, locking on his fatherâs face. âWeâve been training together for years, and thereâs no one else close to our age.
