One, let's act humbly when no one is looking. Nobody saw Jesus with the towel except His disciples. This was not a performance for the crowd. This was a genuinely humble act, behind closed doors. Jesus warned us, “Be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them” (Matthew 6:1).

Service is hard for us, and “secret” service is doubly difficult. Richard Foster wrote in Celebration of Discipline, “The flesh whines against service, but screams against hidden service. It strains and pulls for honor and recognition.” By nature we want people to notice our acts of goodness. By doing things that no one will celebrate, or even know about, we can become a little more like Jesus. Through intentionally anonymous acts—through doing things and making sure nobody knows about them—perhaps we can break the hold that our natural desire for accolades has on us.
