Supermodel Iman steps out

Although Iman had walked in Dior shows since 1979, she, like most other people, would not have known that the 1989 haute couture spring/summer and autumn/winter shows in Paris were to be Marc Bohan’s final collections for the house. They were her final shows too, as she retired from modelling that same year. Bohan, captured on video backstage, had won his second Golden Thimble award the year before, and predicted that 1990s style would be ‘softer, less aggressive, more feminine’. He would go on to try to harness that spirit at Hartnell, a long-established couture house in London, but sadly, that venture failed. Perhaps Iman saw power in both her and Bohan’s departure from the business: ‘I believe in one gimmick,’ she told British Vogue in 2019. ‘There is power in a little bit of mystery. Keep a little bit to yourself. Let them want more.’
