You probably think I was nuts for believing in ghost and demon possessions and shit like that, but I have my reasons. I've got damn good reasons. Besides, luckily, with the exception of that time with Miss Mary Lizzy, or whoever the hell she was; I had witnesses to back me up. Even so, I thought Phylicia was going crazy when she started seeing an extra baby running around the house. So did Darius.
It was a perfectly normal evening and we had a house full of people. Matthew and Arnelle, his wife, were there, along with Darius, Phylicia, Tiny, myself and the kids. Roderick had been sent away on a little sabbatical at the State Farm, another penal facility. Phylicia and Arnelle were in the kitchen, busy cooking. Darren and Roland were both in the room with them.
Matthew, Darius, Tiny and I were watching television in the living room. I don't remember what program was on, but we were terribly engrossed in it. Suddenly, and for no apparent reason, Matthew started yelling at Phylicia and Arnelle.
“Why don't y'all keep those boys in there with you, instead of letting them run around the house?”
“What are you talking about, Matthew?” Phylicia yelled back. “Both
Darren and Roland are sitting here in the middle of the floor.”
“I know damn well, I just saw one of them run through here.”
“I didn't see anything.” Darius said.
“Me neither.” I concurred.
“Oh, so I'm crazy.” Matthew responded. “Just keep them in there.”
We didn't think any more about it. Then a couple of days later, Phylicia comes hauling ass out of the bathroom. “There's a baby in there!” She was screaming.
“There's a baby in where?” I asked her.
“In the bathroom.” She answered. The girl was shaking worse than a bowl of Jell-O.
I ran to the bathroom and looked in, but I didn't see anything. “You must be seeing things.” I told her.
“I'm not crazy, and I know what I saw.” Phylicia hollered. “It was a baby in a long white gown, and he was standing next to the bathtub, dammit.
“Okay, whatever you say. Maybe it was the same one Matthew saw the other night.”
“Yep it probably was.” Phylicia agreed. Although I was only joking; she was dead serious.
Darius and I never did see this baby. He and I simply chalked it up to Phylicia slowly losing her grip on reality. But then Roderick came home from the farm. Nobody had ever mentioned anything to him about the new addition to the family. He walked in the house, late one night, a bit on the tipsy side, as usual, said his hello's, then traipsed down the hallway to our bedroom. Moments later, we heard a blood curdling scream coming from the back of the house.
Phylicia, Darius, Tiny and I went tearing down the hallway to see what had happened. There at the end of the hallway stood Roderick, with his arms wrapped tightly around the doorframe of the hall closet. Tears and mascara were streaming down his face like a mud-slide. He was shivering as if he'd been in a deep freeze for a couple of hours.
