If you want to stay in a country for longer than your short-stay or tourist visa allows, you need to apply for a for a long-stay visa, immigrant visa, or other permit such as work or study. Although many countries now offer visas specifically for digital nomads (which you can read about in the last section), you may qualify for other types of visas as well.
The specifics between the application requirements, costs, and details of different visa types vary by country. But the following is a list of long-term visas, work permit, and residency categories you can choose from:
Business: For people starting a small business in another country. Citizens from countries that are part of the Dutch American Friendship Treaty can apply for the 2-year DAFT permit in the Netherlands with a minimum investment of â¬4,500.
Investor: For people who invest in a business, financial products, real estate, or other investment. Also known as golden visas, which you can read about in the next section.
Freelancer: For people who provide services as an independent contractor. Germany offers a three-month âFreiberuflerâ (freelancer) visa and an artist visa with an option to renew for up to three years.
Marriage: For people who get married to a citizen from a different country. Many countries also have a civil partnership visa.
Medical: For people getting surgeries or other procedures. Colombia has a Special Temporary Visa for Medical Treatment for stays of 6â12 months with an application cost of $175.
Rentista: For people who earn money from a stable or fixed income. Examples include the Portugal D7 visa, the Spain Non-Lucrative visa, and the Costa Rica Rentista visa.
Retirement: Specifically for retirees living on pensions. You can apply for the Panama and Costa Rica âPensionadoâ visas if you have a retirement income of at least $1,000 per month.

Thailand also has a Self-Defense Education visa valid for learning Muay Thai, while Japan has a Cultural Activities Visa for learning skills such as Japanese drumming (Taiko), flower arranging (Ikebana) or hosting a tea ceremony.
Work: For people looking to work for a local company. The Taiwan Gold Card is a multi-use work permit and resident visa, popular among digital nomads, that allows cardholders to live and work in Taiwan for 1 to 3 years.
