Chapter Eleven
Jezebel fidgeted her way through breakfast Friday morning, taking twice as long as usual to eat the scrambled eggs and toast Gretchen gave her. Peter told her a little about Sonya and Ozzie, but she couldnât remember what he said. She was too nervous to concentrate. During a walk with Peter the previous afternoon, sheâd admitted that she had never been to school and didnât know how to read. He had assured her Sonya would teach her to read. While that was exciting news, Jezebel had a bigger worry. What would Ozzie say when he found out? Her former brothers and sisters and their friends had all made fun of her.
Jezebel walked around the back yard after breakfast, waiting for Peter to tell her it was finally time to leave. Heâd told her to stay out of the woods so he could find her easily, but she longed to disappear into the trees. The quiet shade beneath their branches was comforting, although she had to admit the warm morning sun shining down on her was almost as relaxing. What would her old parents think if they knew she was going to go to school? She shook off the thought, certain she didnât want to know. Their reactions would undoubtedly be negative.
Hearing Peterâs voice, she turned toward the house and saw him wave a hand for her to come. She stopped walking. Did she really want to go meet Sonya and see what school would be like for her? Then she realized she didnât have a choice, not if she wanted to follow Godâs instruction to obey her father.
Peter smiled when she joined him. âItâs time to go.â
They went straight through the house to the front door and out to the car. She looked out the window during the entire drive. Sonya and Ozzie lived closer to Rogerâs office than she expected. The one-story house, shaded in front by two large trees, was only two blocks away. Peter pulled into the gravel drive behind a green minivan and turned off the engine.
âLetâs go tell Sonya weâre here.â
Jezebel unbuckled her seatbelt, wishing she could go visit Rogerâs office instead. Sighing, she climbed out of the car and joined Peter on the walk. They stepped onto the front porch, and she discovered the inside door was open, allowing the cool morning breeze to flow through the screen door. Ozzie was sprawled in a comfortable-looking chair while he read a book, but he looked up when Peter knocked on the door.
âHi. Come on in,â Ozzie said, shoving a scrap of paper in the book and rising from his seat. âIâll go let my mom know youâre here.â
Peter opened the door and lifted a hand, indicating Jezebel should enter first. Ozzie headed for the back of the house as she stepped through the door and glanced around the living room. A chair identical to the one Ozzie had been sitting in stood on the opposite side of the room, and a matching sofa sat against the wall beside the front door.
