Chapter Fifteen
âAre you sure you donât want me to come along, Dena?â
Monah held the car door open while the sorrow-filled woman dropped into the front seat. âI really donât mind. I think you need to be with someone right now, and Iâm not sure itâs a good idea for you to be driving.â
Dena grabbed Monahâs free hand and squeezed. âYouâve been such a help, dear, but itâs totally unnecessary for you to accompany me. Besides, I need some time alone to think. And cry.â More tears pursued the previous ones. She shook her head. âI canât believe this is happening.â
âThatâs why I should go with you. Plus, I promised Mike I would stay until your family arrives. If nothing else, I can at least hold you while we cry together.â
Monah meant every word. She and Wayne may not have been friends, but that didnât stop her from sympathizing with Dena at such an awful time.
Dena rose from the car seat and pulled Monah into a quick hug. âI appreciate everything youâve tried to do, really. But there will be plenty of people around me in the days ahead. . .and right nowââshe choked on a sob and twisted her wedding band around on her fingerââI have to be alone, even if just for a few minutes.â Drawing a breath to compose herself, she wiped away her tears then patted Monahâs arm. âI promise, if I need anything, Iâll call you.â
Catching Denaâs hand in a last-ditch effort of persuasion, Monah gave her fingers a squeeze. âAt least let me find you a ride. Mike would be worried sick if he knew you were driving in this condition.â
Denaâs head had already begun to shake. She sat again and grasped the door handle. âIâm a politicianâs wife. Believe me, I know how to handle stress, but I need these few moments of privacy to get ready for what lies ahead. Now, Iâve gotta go. I donât want to get too far behind Wayne.â
Before Monah could say a word, Dena yanked the door closed, started the car, and raced out of the parking lot. Monah waited until she could no longer see the car then, heaving a sigh, went to help Casey finish boxing up the rest of the books, her mind roiling with thoughts of Wayneâs death. None of it made a bit of sense.
âHe was too young.â
Casey stopped taping flaps closed and looked at her. âWho? Wayne?â
âYeah.â Monah rested her arms on the edges of a box. âWhat was he, about fifty? Thatâs too young to just drop dead.â
She hefted her box and walked toward her dadâs truck with Casey doing the same. The memory of Wayne lying on the ground ran through her head as she dropped the tailgate and shoved the box inside. After Casey placed hers next to the other, Monah leaned against the fender.
âDid any of that seem familiar to you?â She paused and stared into Caseyâs eyes. âThink about it. The pale face and sweaty skin. . .
