Chapter Seven

“Should I make a list?” Lucas asked as Jocelyn carefully backed the Mercedes out of the driveway.

“We already have a list. I’m your administrative assistant. Making lists is my job,” she repeated absently, her attention focused on the small wren that was sitting at the end of the driveway. To her relief, as the car neared, it flew away.

Did he treat her like an employee even in their private life? he wondered uneasily.

“You may be my administrative assistant at work,” he said. “But out of work you’re my wife and, as far as I know, the only job description for a wife is to love her husband.”

If only I really were his wife, Jocelyn thought on a wave of longing. Lucas would make a perfect husband. Kind and intelligent and a fantastic lover. A flush stained her cheeks as she remembered the kiss they’d shared.

Lucas watched the color wash over her pale cheeks in frustration. If only he knew what their relationship had been like before the accident. He felt as if he were groping around in the dark trying to fight an armed enemy who had perfect night vision. A faint stab of pain lanced through his left temple, and the very faintness of it helped to ease his frustration. Just yesterday his reaction to any strong emotion had been a sharp flash of pain that lingered. Today the pain was still there, but it was definitely muted.

He really was getting better, he realized. Everything Jocelyn had said was right. All he had to do was hang in there, and everything would be fine. He stole a glance at her face, his eyes lingering on the firmness of her tender mouth as she concentrated on driving over the light dusting of fresh snow that covered the narrow, winding road.

At least, physically everything would be fine. His emotional well-being seemed to be tied up in his wife. In some odd way, Jocelyn’s presence made him feel complete. Whole. And when she smiled at him, he felt as if nothing was beyond him. As if no task was too difficult for him to accomplish.

Maybe his present emotional dependence on her was a result of the accident. He tried to analyze his reaction. They’d only been married for less than two months. He must have done all right before he’d known her.

Maybe, he conceded, but there was a whole lot of ground between doing all right and being happy, and he had the terrifying premonition that he’d never be happy again if Jocelyn wasn’t there.

Don’t borrow trouble, he thought, trying to pull himself out of his melancholy. If it’s out there, it’ll find you soon enough. You don’t have to go looking for it.

“What is your job description for a husband?” he asked, hoping to get some insights into how she thought.

“What?” Jocelyn gave him a startled glance and then hurriedly refocused on the road.

“What do you want in a husband?” he persisted.

“You,” she blurted out the truth.

Lucas felt his tension loosen at her reply.
