Miranda

Michelle disconnected from the Internet and picked up the phone. She dialed the number and waited. Finally, on the sixth ring, the phone was snatched up and Miranda's soft Texas voice came on the line. "Hello?"

"Hi Miranda, it's Michelle. I got your e-mail."

"Thank Heaven," the other woman said. "I've been looking for you."

"Why, what's up?"

"Oh, let's see," Miranda said, and Michelle heard the smile in her voice, "I'm getting married in less than a month, I'm having a dinner party for Daniel's business associates next week. My wedding's next month, and my cook just quit. How's your life?"

"Not quite that harried," Michelle admitted, then leaned back in her chair. "But what I meant was, why were you trying to get hold of me?"

"I wanted to tell you not to order that salmon for the wedding dinner." She sighed. "Daniel wants steak."

Michelle smiled into the phone and made a note on her memo pad. "He's a down-to-the-bone Texan, Miranda. Of course he wants steak."

"I know," Miranda said with a chuckle. "I suppose I should be glad he's not insisting on having the guests rope their own dinner. I swear, the man was born a century too late. He would have been perfectly happy as a cowboy."

"Probably, though I can't picture you as a frontierswoman."

"Oh Lordy, honey, no. Not me, thanks." Miranda took a breath and sighed. "I'm afraid I like the little conveniences." Then she did an abrupt subject change. "So where are you, anyway? I called your house a couple times this morning."

"Actually," Michelle said, standing up and walking to the kitchen, "I'm at Sam's place."

"Sam? My nephew Sam?"

"That's the one."

"Well, honey, do you have something interesting to tell me?"

Michelle cringed a little. "No, I'm just helping him out with the babies."

"But I sent him to a perfectly wonderful agency."

"Apparently the nannies they sent didn't work out."

"Why didn't he say something to me about it?" Hurt colored her voice, and Michelle spoke up quickly.

"I'm sure he didn't want to bother you with it any more."

"He's not a bother, Michelle. He's family." And she meant it. Miranda had a heart as good as gold. And it didn't matter a damn to her that Sam and the other Fortune heirs had only been discovered a few months ago. Family was family and that's all that mattered.

"I'm sure he knows that Miranda," Michelle said, "but Sam's pretty much of a loner. He always has been."

"Hmm … that's right. You knew Sam years ago, didn't you?"

"Yes, I did."

"Any sparks between you two that I should know about?"

"Sparks?" Michelle asked, remembering the heat that engulfed her every time Sam was anywhere near her. The word sparks really didn't describe it. Now maybe the words forest fire … oh my.

"Don't play dumb with me, Michelle Guillaire," Miranda teased. "Since there's nothing you want to tell me, how about you come to dinner tomorrow night, and we can talk about the wedding plans?"

"I suppose I could do that."

"Well, good," Miranda said.
