Rachel is quite a determined and strong-willed person, but this determination and willpower used to evaporate to nothing when she was on a bike and presented with a hill. This wasn't because she found cycling up hills too much of a challenge; more the thought of cycling up them seemed too daunting. On the few bike rides we had previously done together before having children, she would get off her bike at the mere sight of a hill. She would use any distraction as an excuse: picking blackberries in the hedgerow, looking at a butterfly, tying a shoelace, cleaning her sunglasses. Anything to avoid actually attempting to cycle uphill.

But as we reached the halfway point on the bike leg, there she was, cycling up her second hill of the day.

‘Look at you. You're cycling up another hill,’ I said.

‘I know. Look at me go.’

‘Why haven't you stopped to pick blackberries yet?’

‘Because it's June. Blackberries won't be in season for a couple more months.’

‘And if they were, would you have stopped?’

‘It's a triathlon, George. You don't tend to see many triathletes picking blackberries.’

‘Ah, so you're admitting you're a triathlete now?’

‘I... no... er...’
