11. A cartoon from Scraps magazine, c. 1904, satirising the suggestion of naming the London County Council’s new modern road (see image 10) as ‘Dickens Avenue’ (see Chapter 4). Other possibilities considered were blandly descriptive (‘Broadway’, ‘The High’, ‘London’s Avenue’), regal (‘King Alfred Street’, ‘The King’s Way’, ‘The Queen’s Way’, ‘Victoria Avenue’, ‘King Edward Avenue’), colonial (‘Imperial Drive’, ‘Mafeking Avenue’), and memorials to the LCC (‘The Council Broadway’) and politicians (‘Salisbury Drive’, ‘Gladstone Avenue’). The name ‘Kingsway’ was eventually selected.
