Jezza has had a cabinet reshuffle after being elected Labour leader. Now that he has such a huge mandate, he tells us he intends to put aside all the hate and bitterness of the past and is looking forward to even more vitriol and hostility in the future. Diane Abbott as Shadow Home will see to it.

Bump into Theo Rycroft in the street. He is the last of the Cameroons – not least by virtue of marriage to Sam’s sister Flora – and he’s still in No. 10. I ask him a few leading questions. He is instinctively discreet and professional but says Brexit is going to be a nightmare, very complicated indeed. He implies that Old Ma May is calling all the shots and that she doesn’t care who knows it. He doesn’t say it, but it all feels like Charles I: she is trying to rule without parliament. You can see it in the Commons. She lets the MPs ask the questions but tells them they have no right to decide on terms of our departure. To her Home Office mind, immigration is the key to her political fortune. And the only way to stop free movement is to abandon the single market. I have some sympathy with this. I can’t see how Europe will allow for anything other than a hard Brexit.

Light relief from the downfall of Donald J. Trump in the presidential race for groping. All those women he sat next to on aeroplanes who suddenly felt his hand move under their skirts are coming out of the woodwork to tell us how it was for them. Not good. Not good at all. He kept telling us he needed to ‘reach out’ to women in America. And now we know he has done a pretty good job of it. Weirdly, one of his defences is that he learnt it from the best, Mr Clinton, who set a precedent in the White House for sexism, misogyny and adultery. Mind you, he’s not wrong there.
