Chapter 15
I woke up to the sun shining through the window of our bedroom, and wouldn't you know it, right into my left eye. I turned my head to the other side determined to get some more sleep, only to find I was alone in bed. 'That's weird,' I thought to myself, 'I am almost always up before Jill is. Unless that is, she got called in to her practice for an emergency involving one of her patients.' Against my better judgment, or what I would have thought to be my better judgment, I rolled out of bed. I threw on a pair of sweats and a tee shirt and headed downstairs in search of Jill and a pot of coffee.
I turned the corner from the hall leading into the kitchen and waah-la, there she was. “Good morning,” I said to her.
Jill turned and looks at me and in a quiet tone said, “I’ll give you the morning part of that statement; the good part is still to be determined.”
Seeing the seriousness in her face I asked, “What's the matter? You look as though you are going to be ill.”
Jill looked at me and said, “Ill indeed, with a hefty side order of really pissed off!”
'Uh oh,' I thought. Trying to remember what I had done lately to piss off my wife. Concluding that I had not done anything, I walked over to her and asked, “So what's the matter darling?”
Jill looked at me and said, “Human trafficking, that is what's the matter.” I walked over to the coffee pot and grabbed a cup of joe.
Small side note here: nyone ever wonder where things like, coffee and vomit get their nick names— ‘Joe’ for coffee and ‘Ralph’ for vomit? I mean, was Joe some kind of hyper active wild man with an overabundance of energy that constantly bounced off the wall while never spilling even a drop of his coffee? I am not even sure where to start the guessing process for why the name ‘Ralph’ was coined for a steamy pile of half-digested food. I am sure that there is a good back story for that one too.
Anyway, back to what I was saying before I got side tracked. I poured my coffee and looked at my wife and said, “Ok, I am listening, tell me what's on your mind.”
Jill shook her head and began to speak. “I got up earlier this morning to pee and grab something to drink because I had a dry throat. When I got to the kitchen, I realized I may be a little hungry also.”
I smiled and said, “Been there.” I let her continue.
“I turned the television on and saw what was happening on Fox News.” It’s no secret in our house that we like Fox News, especially the O’Reilly Factor and The Five. Ah shit, there I go again. Getting sidetracked. So sorry, where was I? Oh yeah, Jill was saying she had turned on the television to Fox.
“I saw this news report on the human trafficking.
