Chapter 21

TESSA

I was halfway home when the alert came over my phone that Silver Devil had been spotted at the Commons. I gave the driver a twenty that I couldn't afford to get me there in five minutes. When he dropped me at the southern end of the restaurant and bar district of Silver City, the fight between the celestial and Fiend was already in full swing. Everyone around me had their phones out, recording it, which irked me more than a little. How was I supposed to get an exclusive when everyone around thought they were amateur journalists?

Still, maybe I'll see something they won't.

So I recorded the smack down, jockeying for a better position among the crowd. More than a few told me to fuck off, or other colorful metaphors, but I couldn't care less. The moment I saw that Silver Devil was wounded, it became painfully clear to me that I was invested in this fight for more reasons than a simple news story. In spite of how I was starting to feel about Nathan, and the way Silver Devil had rejected me, I cared for him.

My heart was in my throat as the fight progressed. It seemed that Silver Devil had the advantage as he drove Fiend back, but I wasn't naïve enough to think that sealed the deal. I'd read enough comic books and seen enough vigilante footage to know that one mistake, one moment of distraction could change everything.

When the two of them stopped fighting, I frowned and tried to get closer. Were they talking? About what?

The crowd was incredibly dense the closer I got, so actually hearing what they said wasn't an option. I zoomed in, hoping to catch good footage of their lips. Maybe I could somehow read them later. The trouble was, the only part of the conversation that I could see was Silver Devil's. The longer it went on, the more apparent it was that whatever Fiend was saying, it had shaken the vigilante to his core.

Silver Devil lunged for the villain, who simply fell back into a portal and vanished. I stared at the celestial, seeing the fear in his eyes and knowing I was probably the only one here that did.

What happened?

I longed to rush forward and hold him, to let him know that I was here for him. But it was impossible with all the surrounding people. I could only watch as his eyes scanned the crowd, begging him to notice me. And then, he shot into the sky and was gone.

The pedestrians exploded into excited chatter, dissipating fast as each one dialed friends or uploaded the video on their various social media sites.

Once I could move, I tore off in the direction where Fiend had created the portal. The cement was oily, and smelled heavily of sulfur. I snapped photo after photo of the area, looking for anything left over from the fight. A wet, dark red was mixed with the oily stain of the portal and I gulped as I took photos of it.
