Greta had come on board less than a year ago. She had everything under control on the business end, which let him focus on clearing cases, hiring more investigators, training the new guys for licensure, and dealing with the state board that even Greta wouldn’t touch.

Efficient couldn’t begin to describe her. She only bothered him when absolutely necessary, so he knew something was up.

“What did you need, Greta?”

“I had a call from a politician high in state government. It seems his wife hasn’t been home when he calls from his mistress’s bed, and he’s convinced she’s cheating on him, the big hypocrite. He wants her followed, the sleaze ball she’s screwing identified, and the whole thing documented because he says they have a no-money-if-caught-cheating clause in their prenup.”

This was why he was the boss, so he could delegate this kind of bullshit.

“Give it to Leland to assign.”

“He’s got his hands full with the Carson case. Besides, the big shot wants you.”

“He can’t have me. I’m in Mississippi, and I’m done with domestic cases. Tell Mateo he’s up.”

“I did. He said the same thing you did just now, except the Mississippi part, which I know isn’t true since he’s glaring at me with a huge scowl his face.”

Mateo Reyes had worked with Dev in Boston. When offered a position at D&A, he jumped at the chance. A 1st generation Argentine-American he grew up in Miami and had family nearby. With dark, almost-midnight hair and black eyes, the available submissives swooned at the sight of him, but he’d seen his share of messed-up shit in twelve years with the Bureau. The kind of things that could mess with a man’s head without an outlet, and not all subs could handle the way he released it. A sadist who needed control almost as much as oxygen, only a rare woman who could submit to his brand of dominance. As an employee, he needed a challenge but also required structure, predictability, and to work for a man he respected. Greta giving him an assignment he didn’t want—no one wanted these shitty peeping Tom cases—likely rubbed against the grain. If he or Leland were there, it would not be a problem.

“Tell him I said to handle this one, or he’ll get every skip trace referred to us for the next year, which means he can forget about sleeping in the new place he recently leased anytime soon.”

Nick heard grumbling before Greta replied, “I put you on speaker, boss. He heard.”

“That’s cold, Dev,” Mateo spoke up. “You wouldn’t do that to me, would you? We go back for years.”

“Good friend or not, you’re the new guy. Scut work is part of the job. Hell, I snapped dirty window pics almost nightly for the first year.”

“Dammit,” he muttered. “We need to hire someone who enjoys peep shows where the players aren’t always hot.”

“Ew.” The disgusted sound came from Greta who now had a better idea why his men hated these cases so much.

“I don’t think such a PI exists, my friend, but I’ll see what I can do.
