Chapter Fifteen

I knew something was wrong when Logan started foaming at the mouth. Khaleda’s powers were intoxicating, maybe even a little addicting to the unwary. I’d been on the other side of them only once, and even months later, looking in, I had to admit I was jealous of the relief Logan must’ve been feeling. No worries, no fears, no pain… Just the certainty of knowing serving her was the only thing he wanted to do with the rest of his life.

Of course, then there was the whole feeling of spider legs in your brain, her way of poking about in there. What she did exactly, I didn’t know, but she had a way of making you feel naked in more than just the physical sense. Once Khaleda was in your mind, there were no secrets. Everything was hers for the taking.

So when Logan started foaming like a mad dog, I thought maybe it was just a side effect. After all, there was no telling what sort of damage all her rummaging about might do to the average human.

Khaleda’s outstretched arm trembled. Her lips parted, and she wobbled on her feet before collapsing. I went to catch her, but Alice got there first, just barely keeping Khaleda from hitting her head on the floor.

“Well?” I asked, squatting in front of her. “What did you see?”

Khaleda stared straight ahead, her eyes unfocused. Blood trickled from her nose to her lip, leaving a dark stain behind. Her chest moved as she sucked in a desperate breath and blinked slowly. “Subway tunnels.”

“There are almost seven hundred miles of track under this city, Khaleda. I’ll need more than that to go on.”

“That’s all I saw before…” She closed her eyes, turned away, and shuddered. “She said she had a message for you.”

A message? I looked over my shoulder at Logan. Whatever she’d done to him, he was out now, hopefully just unconscious and not dead. Dying under Khaleda’s power was too good for the bastard. Vanessa must’ve used Logan to contact her somehow. That’s a nasty trick, leaving a Trojan Horse like that in your own man. Means she intended for us to find him, for Khaleda to use her power on him as she did. It means she knows every move we’ve made before we even made it.

Alice shifted her weight to prop Khaleda up better. “She meant for us to come here, for Khaleda to use her powers.”

“Any chance she’s infiltrated your people?” I gestured to Zane with a jerk of my chin.

“It’s possible,” Alice whispered, leaning in. “I told we can sense each other’s servants. But if she did, then she’s been spying on me for quite some time. She knows everything.”

Zane couldn’t be trusted. Having him around was just too risky, especially if Vanessa could use him to spy on us without Alice knowing. We’d have to get rid of him, but I still needed his blood for the transfusion. Maybe sending him back to Stefan was best, at least until that was done.
