CHAPTER 32

When Sam’s in the shower, I text Matt.

I have a check for you for the insurance.

Check?

Sam still writes checks I know rite?

OK

Sam’s going to quit working weekends.

?

At the hospital.

I wait. Matt doesn’t answer me.

I’ll tell Sam you said thanks for the money.

CHAPTER 33

“Okay,” I say. “Wish me luck.”

“Luck?”

“For the meeting.”

“Oh,” Terri says. “Good luck then.”

“I really don’t need luck,” I say. “We can get by on just the practice at Roberta’s.”

Terri doesn’t answer me. I walk over to where she is sitting at the kitchen table, sipping her coffee and staring at her phone. I kiss the top of her head.

“Look, don’t worry about it,” I say. “The important thing is no more weekends. We can spend the weekends together.”

“Right,” Terri says.

“I’m going to offer to work one shift a weekend, if they need it, until they can get the coverage straightened out.”

“Okay.”

“I have the meeting at the hospital, then appointments at Roberta’s until five.”

“Okay.

“What are you going to do today?” She shrugs. “Well, enjoy yourself.”

Friday was Terri’s last day at work. Every night I ask what she did all day. Every day I get the same answer, “Nothing.” I kind of miss hearing about her job, even if it was the same thing over and over again. She’ll be glad when she’s pregnant. I’ve seen plenty of pregnant women at work battling morning sickness and exhaustion. Once Terri is pregnant, she’ll realize then how lucky she is not to have to deal with a job. Being pregnant is a full-time job itself. And that way she can be a hundred percent focused on what’s best for the baby.

“I can pick up some more ovulation kits, if you want,” I say.

“Right. Great. Thanks.”

“I don’t have to, if you’re not ready.”

She makes a face.

“Do we have to talk about this now, Sam? I’m barely awake.”

I was going to kiss her, and hug her, but instead I just nod and go.

I drive to the hospital in the BMW. I’m not on duty, this is my annual review. I already requested my leave in writing, specifying that I want to cut down on my hours and no more weekends. My situation has always been unique, but it has worked well for both sides. I was always happy to take the weekend shifts, and the holidays, and let the other doctors take the time with their families. Ideally, I’d like one shift every six weeks. The hospital will still be making lots of money off my cosmetic surgery practice. I don’t want to give up the ED entirely, but if that’s the only choice they give me, I’ve already made up my mind to do that. I’ve been working sixty plus hours a week for over twenty-five years. Vacations were just for the annual conference, once it became a thing. Occasionally I’d fly somewhere to lead a surgical team when the patient couldn’t travel to us for some reason, but that was very rare. That’s all going to change now. It’s time for me to have a life, a family.
