Detox with Beets
Organic beets are a great example of healthy, beneficial produce. Amazing detoxifiers, they can improve athletic performance, help fight inflammation, lower blood pressure, lower your risk for heart failure and stroke, help combat cancer, and improve brain function.254 They are also great for pregnancy because they are high in the B vitamin folate, which has been shown to alleviate morning sickness, particularly fermented beets.255 Beets are high in sugar, so if you need to avoid sugar, it is best to use fermented beets as this removes nearly all of the sugar during fermentation.256 Beet juice is another option, but fermenting your beets gives you all the benefits of raw beets plus you get beneficial bacteria and enzymes, and the fermentation process makes all of the nutrients in beets more bioavailable. Fermented beets have been used to boost immune function, cleanse blood, combat fatigue, and treat kidney stones, chemical sensitivities, allergies, and digestive problems.257 Since beets are so great at detoxifying, be careful about overdoing it in the beginning as this could result in an overload of released toxins, producing bloating, constipation, or even flu-like symptoms.258 If you are juicing, it is best to start out with 1 ounce per day, gradually increasing the amount to an 8-ounce glass per day. If youâre highly toxic, meaning you are an alcoholic, abuse drugs, live on nothing but fast food, or considered medically toxic from chemo, etc., you may need to start out with as little as a tablespoon. The liver has to âfilterâ and process the toxins your body is trying to get rid of, so flooding an already overworked liver would be counterproductive. I always recommend buying organic beets or growing your own from heirloom beet seeds.
