Chapter 9
By the following day, the inn was back to perfect, and Georgia and I were preparing for the guests who would begin arriving the following weekend. Jeremy still had some work to do in the yard, but the repairs were coming along nicely. Luckily, the storm had occurred before the garden had really begun to bloom, so other than a few broken branches and missing paving stones, it looked like most everything would recover without a lot of nudging on Jeremyâs part.
Colt had been able to determine that the phone number Iâd found in suite six belonged to a twenty-two-year-old cocktail waitress from Bar Harbor named Tamara Swenson. After tracking down Tamaraâs ex-roommate, a woman named Jilly Green, heâd been able to determine that Tamara had quit her job and moved out of the apartment theyâd shared after meeting a man around her age named Tate. Jilly didnât know Tateâs last name, but she did say that the guy seemed like bad news. Jilly hadnât seen or heard from either Tate or Tamara in over a month and had no idea where theyâd gone.
As for Coltâs gunshot victim, the name Conrad Bethel wasnât coming up in any database. By this point, Colt was even more certain it was a fake name, but as of the last time Iâd spoken to him, Colt had been unsuccessful in figuring out the manâs real name.
As for the skeletons weâd found on the land I owned across the road, the forensic team had called Colt earlier to report that theyâd determined that there were at least eight people buried in a shallow cave since theyâd found eight skulls. No one had any idea who the skulls belonged to, but it appeared as the skeletal remains had been entombed in the cavern for several decades.
After spending the majority of the day helping Georgia and Jeremy with the maintenance and repairs needed at the inn, I decided to settle onto my little deck overlooking the sea with a glass of lemonade. It was a glorious day with plentiful sunshine, moderate temperatures, and a calm sea. Closing my eyes, I leaned back in my chair and listened to the waves. It had been such an eventful few days that I felt as if Iâd totally lost track of time. Had it only been Monday of this week when Iâd received the call about the woman whoâd caused the accident that had killed Ben and Johnathan? It felt like months had passed since that surprising telephone call.
I opened my eyes and took a long drink of my lemonade. The warm sun on my shoulders had me feeling lethargic. I guessed it had been quite a while since Iâd had a decent nightâs sleep. Between the storm, the surprise guests, the bodies in the shallow grave, and the mugging victim Colt was trying to identify, it really did seem as if Iâd had a lot going on.
Closing my eyes again, I allowed myself to drift gently off toward sleep.
