Angel squirmed on her dressing table chair. “Bernida, I am tired. Finish quickly, por favor?”

Bernida looked up from brushing Angel’s hair dry, and Angel cringed at the hurt look on her face.

“I enjoy this time with you in the evenings, also,” Angel assured her. “It is only that I am falling asleep sitting up.”

“You must not go to bed with wet hair,” Bernida said, brushing faster.

Angel winced as the brush snagged. “I will finish it before the fire,” Angel assured her. “You must be tired, too. It has been a long day for all of us.”

“Sí, señorita.” Bernida relinquished the brush, picked up the damp linens and Angel’s soiled clothing, and quickly left the room, shutting the door quietly behind her.

The soft sound felt like a rebuke because it was so foreign to Bernida’s nature. Angel chastised herself for her impatience. She wasn’t the least bit sleepy, only anxious, and worried. She hadn’t meant to take it out on Bernida.

What would happen tonight? Would Jeremiah return to question her about the horse or the rest of his belongings? She hoped he stayed away, had even sent him a warning message through Bull, but Bull had told her Jeremiah had disappeared two nights earlier. He and Little Bird had been glad to hear that Angel had seen Jeremiah, that he was well. If Jeremiah did come again, Angel intended to chastise him, not only for leaving Little Bird’s care before he was well, but for not letting them know he was all right. Then she remembered his strength of the night before and told herself to stop worrying about him on the first count. How had he healed so quickly?

Angel suspected Juan had someone watching the house. Pedro had sensed someone and his instincts were infallible. She sighed as she closed and locked the balcony door and drew the heavy drapes. At least she wouldn’t be the only person not sleeping this night. Pedro had insisted on locking all the windows of the casa, which meant no cooling breeze moving through the stuffy rooms.

Should she send Jeremiah’s saddlebags to Little Bird and Bull? No, she couldn’t. Juan’s spy would follow them and her friends’ part in Jeremiah’s rescue would be exposed. At this point, Juan only suspected Angel’s involvement. Juan was no threat to her, but the danger he posed to her friends and to Jeremiah made her shudder. She assumed Jeremiah was once again living off the land, as the Comanche lived, since leaving Little Bird’s cabin. Juan’s men could stumble on him any moment.

She must persuade him to give up his quest for vengeance and leave, make a new life for himself far away from this place with all its bad memories. Yet, even as she considered how to accomplish that task, she knew his leaving would break her heart and she feared he would not leave until he had learned the truth about the raid, learned who had murdered his family. She paced beside her bed, her floor-length robe tangling in her legs as she turned.
