Chapter Four

Selene

Selene almost danced with relief as they finally broke free of the trees and found themselves on the side of the road.

“So, town should be just up the road, right?” she asked with a newfound enthusiasm.

“Apparently,” Cassie replied with a smile. Even Addie seemed to be in better spirits now they were on the last leg of a long day.

“Great. I’m dying to take these shoes off,” Selene said. Cassie and Addie turned and looked at her before all three of them burst out laughing.

As they walked, and walked, their spirits slowly dwindled as the road stretched on before them with no sign of any town.

“Are we going the right way?” Addie asked.

“This was the direction the pilot told us to go,” Cassie replied, pulling her suitcase towards her as she stopped walking. “Should we keep going this way? Or should we turn back and try the other direction?”

“Honestly, I have no idea,” Addie sighed.

“This has got to be the most ridiculous day on record,” Selene huffed as she took one stiletto off, then the other; as Cassie and Addie watched on, she raised them over her head and threw them into the trees. Cassie and Addie laughed and cheered.

“You have some spunk after all, Selene. I like it!” Cassie grinned at her.

“That was actually kind of liberating,” Selene admitted. “Let’s just keep going this way. We have to find signs of life at some stage, right?”

“I sure hope so,” Cassie replied with a sigh and started walking again.

They had only gone another few meters when bright lights approached from behind. They all turned, shielding their eyes against the sudden brightness.

“It’s a car!” Cassie cried and started waving her arms in front of her, hoping the driver would stop. They were in luck.

A huge Jeep-looking vehicle pulled up alongside them, and the window wound down to reveal a handsome, albeit scruffy-looking young man.

“Evening ladies. What’s got the three of you walking along here at night?” he asked.

Cassie gave him a quick rundown of their misfortunes and Selene took the opportunity to observe the stranger. She found him exceedingly handsome in a rugged, country-type of way, completely opposite to her straight-laced and prim husband. This man had sandy blonde hair that partially fell across his forehead, with striking cheekbones and a strong jaw. He was wearing a long-sleeved flannel shirt which was folded halfway up his forearm, which was leaning on the open window. Even with a shirt on, Selene could tell his arms were muscular. Very muscular. Again, nothing like her husband. He turned and looked at her, and she felt an instant flutter in her stomach as their eyes met. A smile tugged at the side of his mouth and Selene absently chewed on her lower lip.

“Selene?” Cassie nudged her and she jumped, mortified as she realized they were waiting for her to answer, yet she had no idea what the question was.

“Uh, sorry, I wasn’t listening.” She said haughtily, as though she had better things to do. Expecting him to cower as she raised her eyebrow at him, she was taken aback as he chuckled.
