Chapter Thirteen

~ Joanna ~

Someone knocked on the door. Clint and I exchanged looks. He stood. I looked over my shoulder at Oakley playing on the floor. I’m sure she would be too young to understand what was happening, but I’m sure she would still be curious.

“Hi, welcome.” Clint said, holding the door open for the officers.

I instantly noticed that his posture changed from relaxed to his stiff back cop mode one. I stifled a laugh. Always a cop. Another thing I loved about him, but hated when we first met.

“I’m Officer Keane and this is Officer Lopez. We’ll be conducting the interviews with you.” The officer said.

I recognized her voice from earlier, but it was nice to put a face to the name. She was close to my age, but perhaps a bit younger. Her chestnut hair was pulled back into a tight knot.

We all had a seat around the tiny table in the kitchenette except for Officer Lopez, who stood behind Officer Keane.

“And you are Clint Hartley and Joanna Webber?”

“That’s right.” Clint said.

“And the baby is Oakley. That’s sweet. Hi, darlin’.” Officer Keane said to Oakley, who had come over to see the strangers.

“Hello.” She giggled, then stepped closer to me, grabbing my leg and grinning from the safety of mom.

“She’s sweet.” She checked her notes. “Okay, good. We’ll get started with just some basic questions.”

She then went through a few basic questions, like where we were from, why we were here, and our relationship to the couple. She made a note of each answer. The other officer simply stood back and didn’t engage with us.

“Now, have any of you had any symptoms of vomiting or stomach cramps?”

“She has,” Clint said without hesitation.

I froze. Damn, I knew they were going to ask that, but I didn’t know what I would say.

“Really? Would you be willing to give a blood and urine sample so we may test for poison? We have a task force standing by.”

“Um, sure. Yes.”

“Great.” She then looked at Clint. “But you and the child have been fine?”

“Yes, that’s correct.”

“Okay. Good.” She made a note. “Now, have either of you witnessed anything suspicious?”

“No.” We both answered.

“Yeth.” Oakley said with a giggle.

“Aw, you have? Like what?” Officer Keane switched her tone.

Oakley babbled off something to her about the beach, boats, and fish.

“Well, that is interesting. Thank you.” She pretended to make a note, causing Oakley to smile up at me. I guess she felt important now.

“Alright. Now, I’ll have the phlebotomist over here to collect your sample. Please wait here.” The officers left.

As soon as they left, I started guzzling water as quickly as I could. I needed to be able to pee when they returned, and I had no idea how long it would take.

“Studying for your test?” Clint asked with a chuckle.

“Yep.”

We went back to watching television and Oakley picked up a book.

“That’s a good idea.” I picked up my book, too.

“Book!” She laughed.

I’m so glad she liked reading as much as I did. I hoped it would continue as she got older.
