Chapter 16

Shaye sat back in his designated chair and observed the commotion of the Council over the missing potion. Dagda, a man of exquisite beauty created from sun rays and gold, turned away from the clash of conversation and focused his attention on Shaye.

“Do share with me your thoughts, Shaye. You’ve been disturbingly quiet this eve,” Dagda said. Shaye shrugged a shoulder, tenting his fingers under his chin. He looked at each individual of the Council. The eldest son of each powerful family held position in this Court. Every man present had condemned him for murders he never committed more than two centuries ago. Now, he sat with those same beings as they tried to determine how the potion was stolen and the party responsible for the theft.

“I have naught more to say than that of which has been voiced,” Shaye commented.

Dagda settled back with a small nod. “Nay? Who do you believe to be the guilty party in this matter?”

“I have nothing to base any conviction on. If it should please you to hear of my suspicions, then certainly I believe your daughter is involved.”

“She is no longer a daughter to me, Shaye. She disgraced me and my Council with her selfish antics. Should I’ve believed death a suitable punishment for her, I would have gone through with it, just as with any guilty party. I feel what I issued her is worse than death. ’Tis why she is mortal and not dead.” Dagda tapped the gold arm of his chair. “I asked Liam to approach you in lending aid in our search for her. Have you spoken with him on the matter?”

“Aye. I must tread carefully on ground where Daeanna might pace. Moira is distressed over all possibilities that the woman might reenter our lives. Although she seldom admits to her fears, I do believe she fears for Terrek.”

“Your wife should harbor no fear in your care, or the care of your family.”

“Aye.” Shaye sighed. “Has anyone been able to discern enemy from friend? Who might have been able to breach the wards and guards to take the potion?”

“Hmm.” Dagda looked across the horseshoe-shaped dais. Liam shook his head as two councilmen sandwiched him between their bickering. “I have been unable to determine that.”

“Dagda, with all due respect, you seem exceedingly complacent with the happenings around us. Do you not believe your dau—Daeanna plays a roll in this?”

“’Tis not my place to dismiss any possibilities at this time. If she is behind this, we must find out who lends aid to her cause.” Dagda took a deep breath, a motion of discomfort uncharacteristic of him. “I wish not to think the potion resides in her care. Should it be so, the Fae people will be up against a force more powerful than before. Anger can feed a jaded spirit immense capability, and there is much for her to resent.”

“You speak as if in fear of your own life.”

“I am immortal such that I cannot die, lest I wish for death.
