Chapter 8

Alyssa. She's there, right before my eyes, beautiful and alive and what the hell is she doing here? I throw myself against my bonds, against the spiritual magic that's holding me tight, but nothing happens. I might as well be attacking a wall. Wait - she's climbing up onto the altar? She's mad - where did she get this kind of bravery from? The love in her eyes tears me apart. I want to scream at her, to tell her to run, but no. She's up.

I turn to look at Anna. She's still chanting her foul spell. I look back at Alyssa. My neck feels like it's made of wood. She's by my side. Can she do it? Will she be able to free me?

Hope. After all this pain and disappointment - hope. She reaches for the talisman. I prepare myself for my suicidal attack on Anna, on all the Fallen. What else can I do? I won't flee, I won't let this Cairn become a Pit, not even for my love.

Then Anna's hand clamps down on Alyssa's wrist, and I go berserk. Or at least, I try. From within I feel myself explode, and with everything I've got I try to throw myself at the Fallen shaman. Mustering every ounce of willpower, I manage to barely sit up and paw at Anna's arm. She backhands me contemptuously, and I go down.

Anna hauls Alyssa to her feet. "Well, look what we have here. Family. Couldn't stay away, could you, darling?"

Alyssa doesn't respond. Instead, she slaps Anna with all the strength she has. Anna's head jerks away, and her eyes slit.

"You're going to regret doing that." Anna stares down at me, Alyssa's handmark scarlet against her pale cheek. "Is this the girl you love so much? Oh, this will be sweet. I'm going to have every Fallen werewolf here take her on this altar in front of your eyes. Then I'm going to hold her face an inch from yours as I cut her throat. And then, I promise you, you'll beg me to kill you. And I will. Slowly."

"Wait!" I almost recognize the voice. A man from below. I turn and look down. Haskar. He's stepped forward. "You promised her to me! Leave her alone!"

Anna's contempt is cutting. "And what of it? I gave her to you, but you lost her. I kept my end of the bargain."

"No!" Haskar's eyes are wide with panic and terror. "You promised!"

Anna curls her lips with derision. "Get used to disappointment, omega." She turns back to Alyssa, and with one sharp gesture tears her shirt to shreds. "Now. Let's get this party started."

There's a roar. It's part howl, part anguished scream. Haskar vaults up onto the altar in warform, his furred body crisscrossed with scars, and collides violently with Anna. She immediately shifts into her own warform, tall and lethal and as black as jet, and with incredible speed buries her clawed fist in Haskar's stomach, then pivots at the hip to fling him from the altar so that he lands on his back yards away, his lifeblood bubbling out of his gut.
