Sarah never exactly lost consciousness, but she was far away for a long time. Things were happening, and she could hear them, see them, but she couldn’t focus on them or respond to them. After a little while, there was a bright shining point of light in her eye, and without warning, she found herself blinking fast and hard. “Ah,” James said, moving the light out of her eyes. “Welcome back.”

She was on an exam table. In the ER. She recognized the tacky posters. “Why am I down here?”

“You cracked your head. Lost consciousness. That means you get an all-expenses-paid trip to the emergency room, so that a handsome resident can stare deeply into your eyes.” The twinkle in his tawny eyes nearly overwhelmed her. “Merry Christmas.”

“My head hurts.”

“I imagine it does. You hit hard.”

“Did you bring me coffee?”

His turn to blink hard as he tried to catch up. “Sorry, what?”

“Did you bring me coffee? With breakfast?”

“I—yes, but it spilled. Does it matter?”

She nodded, the world spun, and she took a couple of deep breaths until it steadied. “Yes, it does matter. I hate coffee.”

James stared at her in total confusion. “You—hate coffee? You’re a doctor and you don’t drink coffee?”

“It tastes like bitter jockey shorts. It’s disgusting.” She moved carefully, working towards sitting up more on her own, pressing at the sore spot on the back of her head. She winced as soon as her fingers came near the wound.

“I’m sorry to be an idiot, but I don’t understand. How did you survive med school without coffee? You don’t drink energy drinks, do you? Talk about bitter jockey shorts.”

Sarah managed to sit up without barfing, which felt like quite a win, all things considered. “So, what’s the dx, doc? Am I clear to go back to work?” She started to hop off the table, but her knees went weak, and she shook her head to clear it, which made everything really dicey for a moment. James all but lifted her back onto the exam bed.

“Yeah, I’m thinking no. You’re going home to bed, preferably with someone to watch you for concussion complications.” Sarah held onto the edge of the bed while the world settled down to a slow tilt-a-whirl lurch.

“Does the cat count?”

James stared for a moment, then sighed. “Not even a roommate?”

“Nada. Just me and the cat.”

“Well, then, I’m just going to have to invite myself over.”

Sarah felt her cheeks burn bright red. “Are you joking?”

“Nope. Car keys?”

“I don’t drive,” she said. “Public transportation is good for the environment and the wallet.”

“We’ll take my car, then.”

“Did you drive all the way in here on your day off just to bring me breakfast?”

This time he paused, for a really long time. “Would it be a bad thing if I did?”

She sighed, rubbing her temples, trying to figure out how to phrase things. “James, I’m not--you know how, on TV, you see those women who are super career oriented, and then they meet the right guy, and they’re all lovey
