When we partnered with this community group, we understood its connection and commitment to the vitality of this community and that it presented the opportunity for a university/community partnership that could make a difference in the shaping of this community’s future. Our goal was to supplement the work of the Rio Grande Community Development Corporation and assist them to reach their goals.

Over the period of the three-year grant, RCRP built on its relationships to identify possible funding sources and subsequently did the necessary work to raise $1.8 million dollars of the $2.2 million that was necessary for this incubator. We wrote the business plan, conducted a community assessment, and staffed a community advisory group. We also brokered the relationships which underpinned the incubator as a three-way partnership between community, university and local government. The South Valley Economic Development Center (SVEDC) is today a small business incubator – individuals and groups have access to a certified commercial kitchen that allows them to produce goods for sale in and outside the area – and a lively centre of community activity.
