• Fibre Channel communications are point-to-point oriented. A session is established between the two points through the device login. This session establishment is similar to TCP session establishment.

• Fibre Channel supports a logical node connection point between node ports (N_ports). This is similar to TCP and UDP sockets.

• Fibre Channel Protocol (FCP) supports flow control on a hop by hop basis using a buffer-to-buffer credit (BB_Credit) method. In BB_Credit flow control, the source and destination set the number of buffer credits allowed to accumulate before the source stops sending data. Each frame sent from the source must be acknowledged by the destination, and a buffer credit supports an unacknowledged frame. If an initiator wants to talk to a target, it first negotiates with the target for the number of BB_Credits allowed. During transmission, the source keeps a running count of buffer credits. If the number of credits reaches the maximum buffer credit, the source stops sending until it receives an acknowledgment from the destination. Flow control with Fibre Channel is similar to TCP flow control except that the Fibre Channel mechanism has no drops.
