The United Nations issued seventeen Sustainable Development Global Goals, which I have adapted here to include fresh air as a separate, eighteenth goal (this is only implied in the UN listing):

• No poverty

• Zero hunger

• Good health and wellbeing

• Quality education

• Gender equality

• Clean water and sanitation

• Affordable and clean energy

• Decent work and economic growth

• Industry, innovation and infrastructure

• Reduced inequalities

• Sustainable cities and communities

• Responsible consumption and production

• Climate action

• Life below water

• Life on land

• Peace, justice and strong institutions

• Partnerships for the goals

• Clean fresh air

The goals in italics are directly pertinent to this book but all are relevant to the construction industry.

The Brundtland Report makes it clear that there are three cardinal dimensions to sustainable development – environmental, economic and social ones – but these underpin the basic premise that we need to improve the quality of life for all.

Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
