Another blimp, another vision.
My heart thumps wildly in my chest, despite having just spoken to our little gift. Milo glares absent-mindedly at the stone wall of the room. As if itâs the root of all our problems.
Everything is fine. Sheâs fine.
âRemind me why we arenât there with her again?â Milo asks, his leg bouncing anxiously where heâs sitting at the small table and chairs inside the cool room. Between the small portable heater and the light from candles, itâs more than enough to burn away the chill of being this far underground but in the fall, I certainly wouldnât call it comfortable. Seems colder than I ever remember it being. Doesnât take a rocket scientist to figure out why. I open my mouth to answer but I donât have one. Not a good one, anyway. Just the same ridiculous ramblings of Mara. Insisting it would be bad luck to see Kita before the wedding.
We only have so much time together...
The thought sends lethal darts through the bond just as a small knock fills the room, âCome in.â The worn face of our father peeks in from behind the heavy door, only adding to our foul mood, âI bought dinner.â He says, holding up a bag of takeout.
Milo nods in thanks, reaching for the food, âKita?â
Father holds up his free hand. His pale skin looks ashen like he hasnât been taking care of himself, let alone sleeping, âHers is out in the car. You two were closer on my way.â Milo grumbles something inaudible before tearing into the takeout box. Pausing as he stares at the food inside, his mood growing even more annoyed. Father scoffs, âThereâs no sauce on it.â
He remembered.
My brother clamps down on his inner cheek, a strange and conflicting series of emotions filter through the bond, making my appetite all but disappear completely. âThanks...â We mutter in unison, tensing for the spill of corrections that typically fall from his taunt thin mouth. I look up from the corner of my eye in time to see his mouth quirk up, only a little instead. All the things Carlton Voclain is sentimental isnât one.
So why does he look like that right now?
âFuck.â He breathes out, crossing the room before falling onto the bed. His head buried in his hands; Milo pauses a bite of food halfway shoved into his mouth before eyeing me with confusion. We both just sit there like weâve got two brain cells collectively, staring at the proud tall Carlton Voclain. Senior member of The Order, multimillionaire, damn impressive water weirder, crumple in on himself. Looking smaller than Iâve ever seen him. Heâs less than a few days from the achievement that would elevate him to elder status, what heâs always wanted. To see us through to the end, to ready us for our purpose. I donât see a hint of excitement or determination in his wary form, its... unsettling. He takes a deep breath facing us finally, looking like heâs about to have a fucking aneurysm.
