PADDED CELL Crib bumpers were initially designed to protect babies from sticking their heads through the wide slats of cribs. Tough crib standards in the U.S. and Canada have decreased this risk to almost zero. In the meantime, crib bumpers have been linked to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The crib bumper remains, however, a beloved element of nursery decor, as expectant parents busily furnish their nests with matching fabrics. A bare bed, however, is safer than a padded cell. The best crib ornament, it turns out, is a fresh baby (ideally a drowsy one), packaged in a snug sleeper suit.
