Chapter Seven

As Jessica walked through the door of her apartment, she knew two things. One, that her head was pounding; and two, that she had no flipping idea what the hell was going on with this case. She kicked her heels off and undid her hair, shaking it loose. As she walked to the kitchen she tossed her briefcase on the sofa that sat near the door. She went to the cupboard, grabbed a tall glass, and walked to the fridge. She pressed the glass into the door of the freezer and filled it with ice then opened the refrigerator door and grabbed a Pepsi. After placing the glass on the countertop, she popped the tab and carefully poured the liquid into the glass. Her mind was going over the conversation from earlier that morning with Luce in this very kitchen. “There has to be something we’re missing,” she said to no one.

With the glass in hand, she walked back to the living room and her briefcase. Sitting on the sofa, she placed the glass on the end table and proceeded to pull out the case files that formed James Foreman’s history with the ATF and started reading again. Three hours later and still no clearer picture of the man, she rubbed her eyes, stretched, and realized that she was hungry.

Tossing the files on the cushion beside her, she stood and walked back to the kitchen. Jessica opened the refrigerator and looked over the shelves; she saw nothing that appealed to her except the untouched curried chicken she had ordered for Luce. She reached for it, popped it into the microwave, and grabbed a fork from the drawer. Once the bell dinged, she took the carton out, walked back into the living room, and reached for the remote for the CD player. Soon the room filled with the soft calming notes of a sonata by Mozart. She relaxed into the sofa and closed her eyes as she let the music just pour over her. With a peaceful mind, she started eating her dinner and thinking about the tall woman who had been in her apartment not twenty-four hours earlier.

They had been through a lot in the past. They had met in college in a psychology class. Jessica had been watching Luce for a while and finally decided to bite the bullet, so to speak, and ask the tall, young woman if she wanted to join her for a cup of coffee. Luce had agreed and they ended up talking all night and being late to their classes the next day. She remembered how Luce, even back then, had been so full of life. She had her head on straight along with a strong sense of duty and right and wrong. She also discovered that night that they had many of the same interests.

She laughed as she remembered the first time Luce kissed her. They had been out for coffee several times by then and both realized there was chemistry between them.
