Two hours until dawn, and even though the club caters to vampires and humans alike and wonât close until shortly before the sky lights with the first glimpses of daybreak, itâs hardly enough time to get there and do anything constructive now. I head to the library, grabbing a copy of the Vade Mecum before plopping into one of the overstuffed chairs to read.
The Bible of Vampires is a red leather-bound book with gold-edged pages and double the thickness of most bibles. The first page reads like a family tree. I flip a few pages in, skimming down the page and coming across the words Vampira and Vampiro. I type them into my phone, learning the intermingled language is Italian. I read for over two hours, fascinated by the history, centuries and centuries old. The vampires have survived through time because of their strong will, intelligence, and views of right and wrong.
I sense his presence in the doorway because every neuron in my body ignites any time heâs near. Salvatore closes the door and stalks to the roomâs black marble bar. âYou havenât had blood yet. The amount you had during the transition and at the bar when you passed out might have sustained you, but by tomorrow night, youâll need to have real nourishment.â He pours a glass of the Descallia Red and hands it to me. âDrink.â
I swallow hard, looking at the dark wine and blood combination, tilting the glass and watching with horror as the thick liquid begins to glide toward my lips. I pull it away quickly. âI canât.â
He growls with frustration. âImpossible. But not unexpected given your aversion to our kind.â
I start to deny it, to tell him that itâs not true, but something in his eyes tells me not to barrel forward with a half a truth.
He contemplates my silence for a moment. âIâve connected with Lucas. Embry will be back at the club tomorrow, and youâll both return to the club together. Have a Descallia Red with her. Youâll need at least that much, so consider that an order that you will not disobey, Lucianna.â
I nod, grateful at least for the short reprieve and feeling lighter knowing that Embry is well enough to return to work. I canât help looking forward to seeing and talking to her, especially now that we have thisâwhatever turning into a vampire is calledâin common, too. âYou reconsidered? I thought you were forbidding that I return to the club?â
Salvatore observes me over his glass of wine. âYouâll go undercover as we initially planned, but youâll no longer report to Morgan. You will report to me. If I feel itâs pertinent or strategically sound to inform him, Iâll do so. Is that clear?â
âYes.â I try hard not to let my smile escape, but I can only imagine how that conversation went down. I would have paid a weekâs worth of my old salary to be a fly on that wall. âIâm not sure why the change of heart, but I appreciate it, Salvatore.
