âEsméralda.â
There was that tender stroke on the top of my head, the action encouraging me to lift my gaze to see Father right there in the shadows of the darkness opposite from me.
He was bowed down on one knee, and though he tried not to show his displeasure regarding what had just occurred, it was written all over his face.
âSorry, Esme.â The vulnerability in his voice could make any childâs heart shatter. He made it seem like heâd truly disappointed me. âI wish I could have given you the perfect life I envisioned.â
His words made me smile as I reached out to lightly tap his cheek.
âDid you try your hardest?â I whispered and watched the way his eyes swarmed with familiarity before they softened with pride.
âI tried very hard.â I knew he did because we were alive. All of us. Mother, Lucas, and Antionette could be ungrateful and dismiss the true reality of our lifestyle, but I knew better.
We were untouchable thanks to the steps Father took to keep us safe and protected from all those who wished for his empire to fall and his beating heart to stop.
They may have not appreciated that we didnât live a perfect life, but this livelihood that was given to me was one I truthfully cherished, and I wouldnât trade it for the world.
âThen you did brilliantly, Papa,â I praised with a pure smile that lit up my entire face. âI wouldnât trade any of this. Iâm grateful to be a Bellerose, and no matter what happens from now to the new year, nothing will change it,â I vowed and faintly added, âBesides, Iâm not afraid of monsters, remember? They canât hurt me.â
He cracked a smile. âNo matter what?â
âNo matter what,â I vowed. âIâm probably in love with one.â
He chuckled and shook his head. âI can smell trouble.â
âYa right,â I huffed and rolled my eyes. âYou smell white musk and cedarwood with a touch of mint and lotus leaf.â
Now his eyes were glimmering with amusement as he took the chance to roll his eyes.
âThe perfect scent of trouble,â he emphasized and rose up. His bones literally cracked at the movement and he groaned. âI swear Iâm getting old.â
I snickered at the comment. âSays the man who can probably take out an alleyway of assassins if he needs to.â
âWhy would I need to when my apparent prodigy can do it for me?â Father tossed back, and I pouted my lips.
âSometimes I feel you know far too much," I complained.
âKnowledge is power.â He winked and offered his hand out. âNow that your mother is off to take her anger out on anything else that can move, you should get going before she comes back for round two.â
âUgh,â I groaned before placing my hand in his. He helped me up and we made our way out from the secret spot and put the bookshelf back in its place.
Taking our previous places, I watched Father sit back into his seat before he reached for the bottom drawer of his desk where he kept his valuables.
