CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“Oh, my God…” I said, staring at the warped, beaten, and bruised face of the witch who had been missing from the last few gatherings. “It’s Patrick!”

“Help me,” Remy said, already advancing toward Patrick, whose screams were carrying through the woods around us.

I looked around for a key, anything that could help unlock the crude shackles he had been chained up with, but the entire cabin looked like it had been turned inside out. A dresser lay toppled to the floor. A bed with no mattress had collapsed into itself, or had been kicked in. There had been a mirror hanging on the wall, a large oval thing, but now it laid on the floor shattered into thousands of pieces.

Remy tried to undo the shackles, but was having trouble.

“Step aside,” I said, and Remy looked at me. He let go of the shackles, and I imagined them unlocking for me. I raised my right hand, pointing my thumb and index finger at the shackles, then I made a twisting gesture with my fingers, and the restraints came loose, the bolt falling to the floor.

Remy helped remove Patrick’s hands from his bindings, but Patrick didn’t want to be touched. He kicked and flailed and screamed, and for someone who had been stabbed and bled almost to the point of death, it was almost nauseating to see just how much strength he still had in him.

But Remy was stronger than him, and healthy. He pulled Patrick out of the shackles and picked him up as if he were a child. I backed out of the cabin, happy to leave, and gave the front door a wide berth. My heart was thumping, and a sharp pain had manifested on the side of my head, almost like a stabbing sensation.

I pressed my fingers against my temple and shut my eyes, but nothing helped.

Remy stepped out of the cabin with Patrick in his arms and moved quickly toward the Prius. I ran ahead and searched the trunk for the road safety kit. It was lying next to a duffle bag, which I assumed Jeanette used for gym visits. I pulled open the kit and grabbed the fire blanket that was inside, then brought it into the backseat of the car. I spread it out so that Remy could lay Patrick down and moved out of the way to give him space. He approached quickly and slowly slid the injured man into the back of the car. He had stopped screaming now. I thought maybe he had passed out, because that was what it sounded like, but when I saw his eyes, they were open. And not just open, either, but wide and wild. Unsettlingly so. Patrick looked at me, and I shrank away from his stare, my chest suddenly tightening as if caught in a vice grip.

Remy stepped out of the car and helped get Patrick’s legs inside. When he was in, Remy closed the door, leaving a bloody hand-print on the Prius’ white frame.
