The Face

The next morning, the beginning of day three, saw the team back in the center of the ruined city examining more of the temples surrounding the city center, except for Helene who had been delegated by Mostyn to guard the gold coffin.

Doctors Maddy Hyde, Waldemar Lentz, and Richard Munroe were examining a temple dedicated to Shub-Niggurath, while Dotty Kemper had returned to the Hall of the Dead to examine the contents of one of the wooden coffins from along the wall. Jones and White had carefully removed the ornate wooden box from its niche and set it on the floor. Mostyn was present mostly to satisfy his curiosity, although he had helped Dotty remove the coffin lid.

Inside the coffin was an intricately wrapped mummy, the wrappings being very dark brown to almost black in color.

“Are you going to unwrap it?” Mostyn asked.

“That’s a long and arduous process and often results in damaging the body,” Dotty replied.

“So are you?”

“I don’t think so. The resin used on the cloth is fairly hard. I’d have to chip this away, rather than actually unwrap the body. Besides, physical unwrapping is actually outdated. X-rays and CT scans will let us virtually unwrap the body without actually doing so. The scans preserve the integrity of the dead person’s body.”

“I see.” Since Baker was with the other scientists, Mostyn took a few pictures for the official records.

Dotty, magnifying glass in one hand and a scalpel in the other, asked, “Did Bardon say anything about the find?”

“Be careful.”

“That sounds like him.” Dotty poked and prodded the wrapped corpse. “I’m not an Egyptologist, but I’d say this body is pretty much identical to those of Egyptian mummies. I wonder if the Egyptians learned the practice from these people?”

“Good question,” Mostyn replied.

The walkie-talkie crackled into life. “Come in Mostyn, this is Jones. Over.”

“Yeah, Jones, what is it?”

“You better get topside. Something weird’s happening.”

“Roger that. Mostyn out.”

“Come on, Dot. Let’s go see what Iram is throwing at us this time.”

“This is starting to creep me out.”

“How so?”

“The weird stuff that’s happening.”

“It goes with the job, you know that. Unidentified Phenomena?”

“Yeah, right. I’ve done weird. But this degree of weird…?” She shook her head.

They climbed up the steps to the great hall and then walked out into the city square where they saw the other team members.

Everyone was looking and pointing at the sky. The clouds were black and roiling. The wind was blowing out of the northeast. Along the tops of the dunes that were above the valley, the sand was being whipped up into gritty, coruscating sheets. A mist of sand was falling everywhere.

Mostyn and Kemper walked over to where the team members were clustered.

“When did this start?” Mostyn asked Jones.

“About five minutes before I got you on the walkie-talkie.”

“Did anything set this off?”

Jones shrugged. “Don’t know. Baker was photographing pictures on the walls. Munroe was working on translating something. The archaeologists were examining the altar area. Unless you two did something.”

“Don’t know what it would’ve been. Kemper was looking at a mummy and I was taking pictures of the thing.
